Accommodation / Facilities on Tour

The accommodation on the 5 DAY TOUR will be bare-bones basic with basic cots in shared rooms. On occasion there may not be electricity or running water due to lack of infrastructure and services in the national park. You will be travelling in the high plateau and in the middle of the desert – toilet facilities will only be available on the first day of the Uyuni tour and might have a small local cost (Day 3).

Remember

• On the Regular Tour: It can get very cold especially during the winter months of Mayo to August so bring extra warm clothes along like a scarf and wool hat to keep warm. We also recommend bringing an extra 5 litres of water so you can have enough water for the whole trip.
• On the Improved Tour: Accommodation ; heaters are guaranteed and water is provided.

This Tour May Run Backwards

If you are arriving from Villazón (border Argentina-Bolivia) it is just one and a half hours from the border to Tupiza. We can also arrange a transfer-in for an extra cost.

Important Info

During the rainy season from January to April, the Salt Flats fill up with water so it is not possible to cross them in the same way as during dry season. As a consequence, the itinerary is modified during that period. The main changes are usually as follows:

Instead of stopping at the Inca Wasy (Fish Island), we stop at a place where the water reflects  the sky and where it seems that the sky and the ground merge into one.

• On day 3, we might sleep in a different location.
• We visit the Sol de Mañana Geyser and hot springs at the end of day 4 instead of in the morning of day 3.
• When snowing the roads may and will be closed because of the heavy snow so on the 3rd day an optional route will be used instead. (red and green lagoon won´t be seen).

PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS NO WAY TO PREDICT THE WHEATHER DUE TO GLOBAL WARMING NOT EVEN WITH THE MOST ADVANCED TOOLS NOWADAYS 

Day 1

Hotel Pick up at 7:00 a.m. and leave La Paz with direction to Patacamaya located at 96 Km.

Enjoy the road in the Andes high plateau , arrive to Condoramaya to visit the first Tombs of Mummies on this tour, then, to Curahuara de Carangas also known as the Sistine Chapel of the Andes to appreciate all the Renaissance structure. Continue until Sajama National Park. Later, relax by entering the Hot Springs at 35 °c, culminate the day one, having delicious dinner at our hotel and rest for the next day.

Day 2

Early start for the adventure to drive with the 4×4 Jeeps to Huayña Khota lagoon home of flamingoes and vicugnas. Continue to Sequegua enjoying the mountains that surround the road, going by kewiña forests and observing llamas and alpacas, then ascend to arrive to three lagoons in the Chilean frontier, take a walk by the Tombs of Mummies (polychromatic archeological burial site) unique and very well preserved through time and climate. After arriving at Sabaya Village, enjoy a delicious lunch on the way; Now head to Salar del Coipasa, a small salt desert that is on the way to reach Salinas town to make a quick stop and then go to our hotel in Jirira town for dinner and rest to begin the adventure on Uyuni salt flats at the next day.

Day 3

Start your tour off at 10:30 a.m. with a visit to the salt mounds (salt mines); salt water eyes and then a hotel made completely of salt which is currently being used as museum.

Lunch is served most of the time in the middle of that salt flats so we can have a nice time to contemplate the hugeness of the place. After, go to Fish island a place where petrified coral is seen all over. Take time to organize your group for fun perspective and proportion-distorted photos on the blinding white surface of the salt flats. Then, head to Pia Pia island for the unique experience of seeing a beautiful sunset over the salt flats.

Day 4

Start off at 7:00 a.m. for breakfast, first stop, Galaxy Caves and then go to Chiguana desert on the south side of Uyuni salt flats, surrounded by volcanoes such as Ollagüe (5840m), which is still active and that can be seen from the lookout point. Continue along a rocky road – Pasito Tuntun, later, appreciate: Cañapa, Hedionda and Chiarcota Lagoons in which flamingoes are frequently around.

Then, enter to Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve and visit Siloli Desert at 4550m (the highest and driest in the world) take a photo next to the ‘Rock tree’, a lava rock formation. Before arriving to our final destination, stop at the overlook point by the Red lagoon to see more pink flamingos in their natural habitat and admire this intense red-colored lake. Stay the night at a shared family lodging.

Day 5

Get off to an early start around 5:00 a.m. to visit the Sol de Mañana Geyser, at 5.000m and walk next to fumaroles and steaming craters filled with boiling pots of mud at 150-200 Cº. Continue to the open air hot springs and take a bath in 35 Cº water before enjoying a pancake breakfast. The next places to enjoy are the Dali Desert where Salvador Dali found his inspiration from boulders sprinkled in the middle of the desert, and then Green Lagoon (toxic copper water at the foot of the big Licancabur volcano at 6000m, a few kilometers from the Bolivia-Chile border).

Then head back to Uyuni passing by beautiful scenery along the way and eating a picnic lunch along the roadside. On the way, pass by Rock Valley, Alota settlement and San Cristobal Village where a barroque church and colonial paintings can be seen. Return to Uyuni by 6:30 p.m.
