Travel across the most symbolic route of Bolivian tourism: Salt flats, islands, cactus valley, Lipez high plains, moun-tains, rivers, lakes, fauna and trails, protected natural area

IMPORTANT INFO

During the rainy season from January to April, the Salt Flats fill up with water so it is not possible to cross them in the same way as during dry season. As a consequence, the itinerary is modified during that period. The main changes are usually as follows:

  • Instead of stopping at the Inca Wasy (Fish Island), we stop at a place where the water reflects the sky and where it seems that the sky and the ground merge into one.
  • On day 1, we might sleep at another location.

REMEMBER: It can get very cold especially during the winter months of May to August so bring extra warm clothes along like a scarf and wool hat to keep warm. We also recommend bringing an extra 5 litres of water so you can have enough water for the whole trip. Important Info: During the rainy season from January to April, the Salt Flats fill up with water so it is not possible to cross them in the same way as during dry season. As a consequence, the itinerary is modified during that period.

During the winter season (from June to August), it is not possible to access Eduardo Avaroa national park (red lagoon, dali dessert, green lagoon). However, there is the possibility of visiting black lagoon and rock valley if on the third day of your tour it does not snow. We also may sleep in a different location due to road access.  As it is hard to forecast the weather at high altitudes and due to global warming and it may also snow abruptly.

SUGGESTED PACKING LIST

Sun hat, sunglasses (to protect your eyes from the bright glare off the salt panes), sunblock, coat, gloves, wool hat, trekking shoes, warm socks, swimsuit and towel for hot springs at Sol de Manana Geysers, extra bottles of water (we recommend bringing a 5 Liter bottled water so you can have enough water for the whole trip), snacks, personal medication. Flashlight/torch, camera, extra batteries and memory card, charger (electri-city available in most hotels), hand sanitizer, personal first aid kit. You will be sleeping up to 4,300 meters above sea level and depending on the season, temperatures can drop well below zero (reaching less than -15 degrees Celsius in the winter months of June and July) and the wind chill can be harsh, so bring plenty of warm clothes like a scarf and wool hat for the chilly evenings.

ACCOMMODATION / FACILITIES ON TOUR

The accommodation on the Uyuni Salt Flats tour will be bare-bones basic with basic cots in shared rooms. On occasion there may not be electricity or running water due to lack of in-frastructure and services in the national park. You will be travelling in the middle of the desert – toilet facilities will only be available on the first day of the Uyuni tour and might have a small local cost.

NOTE: If you come back to the departure point, please ONLY BRING the necessary material & clothes during the tour.

08:00 Breakfast and the start of the tour to the look out point of the Ollague volcano, which is still active, also visit the galaxy cave. About two hours away from San Pedro de Quemez. The first is a rock fantasy that takes the visitor to another dimension. The rock formations were created when the salt flats were still a sea and the Thunupa volcano came into contact with the water about 225 million years ago. They resemble strange bones hanging from the ceiling and walls, forming extraordinary figures.

12:30 continue along the rocky road that is called “stone animals“.

15:00 After that enter the route of the CAMPANITAS ISLANDS  on the salt flats

17:30 Arrival to Uyuni where you will wait for the bus, train or flight to La Paz or other destinations.
